Editor’s Letter
What is going on people? Welcome to B*I*T*C*H*£*S, just a quick reminder it stands for, Bold Individuals That Challenges Hiphop’crisy En Style. You are maybe were thinking why this title, out of all the other possibilities? Well simply I wanted a name that would catch your attention.
I wanted a word that is continuously used in hip-hop vernacular to put women down. There are so many words that automatically spring to mind, but the word ‘bitch’ due to its history and definition stood out. There are numerous amounts of songs by male and female rappers that used this word to attack women. Enough is enough.
The word on its own does not mean a thing. So by changing its definition with positive words – hence the acronym; people will be more conscious as to why they are using such a damaging. Some may see this project as being feminist. Well, it is about giving women a chance to be represented in hip-hop. If this is what feminism is about, then I am not ashamed of being a feminist.
It is time for women whose only presence in hip-hop is that of the booty-shaker in the male rappers music video to get their voices heard. Women have played too much of an important role in shaping and advancing the genre. It is time for us to take centre stage and show them how it is to be done.
So if you are a, Bold Individuals That Challenge Hiphop’crisy En Style, then bring on the readership revolution.
